February 2, 2022 | More: Bellingham| Campgrounds

Located on the western coast of Washington, Bellingham is a coastal city near the Canadian border, which is convenient for travelers who want to get to Alaska. Its location near the Canadian border also means that it is a port for ferries to the icy north. The nearby Mount Baker is a huge snow-capped volcano with ski runs. There are several museums and galleries to explore while in town. The SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention offers hands-on science exhibits, while the Whatcom Museum focuses on local, state and regional history. The lightcatcher building is particularly beautiful, with its curving translucent wall.

For camping, you should try Larrabee state park, which is south of the city. This is the first state park in Washington, and it is the closest to the city. From here, you can get a great view of the islands. You can also find a variety of hiking trails in the area, including the Fragrance Lake trail that begins across Chuckanut Drive. You can even catch a train that passes by, which is fun if you’re visiting during the summer.
