The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex is a congressionally-designated wilderness area located in the Western Montana region of the United States. It is named for Bob Marshall, an early forester and conservationist who was also one of the founding members of The National Park Service and the Wilderness Society. You can visit the area to experience the true wilderness experience. If you’re interested in hiking, camping, and backpacking, this is the place for you.
This pristine landscape is home to the densest population of grizzly bears in the U.S. This is why backpacking in the Bob Marshall area is highly recommended. However, if you are not experienced in the backcountry, you can hire an outfitter or guide to help you enjoy the adventure. For these trips, you’ll be riding horseback and carrying your gear on a string of mules. Depending on your experience level and your equipment, you can choose between a daylong trek or a weeklong expedition. The outfitter will also set up camp at high-mountain campsites, prepare meals and provide other amenities.
The Bob offers a variety of landscapes, including lush forests and mountain peaks. The two sides of the continental divide have drastically different ecosystems. On the west side, you’ll find a pristine, lush forest. On the east, you’ll find a dramatic rocky landscape and sweeping vistas. Loop routes through The Bob are nice, but they’re not practical. Most people go with an outfitter and will pay for a guide and equipment. If you’re not sure about the trailhead location, ask a local for advice.
In addition to the Bob Marshall Wilderness proper, there’s also the Great Bear Wilderness Area and Scapegoat Island Wilderness. Both are located near Glacier National Park and are managed by the Spotted Bear Ranger District. The Bob Marsh Wilderness Complex was named after a pioneer of wilderness preservation in the U.S., the first of its kind. In 1964, the federal government established the Great Bear Wilderness and the Scapegoat Wilderness areas. The vast terrain is home to a variety of wildlife, from grizzly bears to gray wolves. It’s an incredible place to hike and camp in.
Before heading into the Bob, make sure you have the right gear. The park has many campgrounds that are well worth the cost. There are many opportunities to do outdoor activities in this area, including hiking, fishing, and horseback riding. Just be sure to check the weather conditions before you go. If it’s too hot, consider booking an alternative date in a town with cell service. The road is well-maintained and you’ll be happy you stayed in the campground.
The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex is located in the southern part of Montana and is home to a number of natural lakes. This area offers excellent fishing, but there are no stocking programs in the region. While you can find pockets of trout, most bodies of water are barren due to harsh winters and predation. You’re more likely to catch brook trout in higher altitude areas. In this remote region, the buck is plentiful, and you can find solitude.
