15 Best Campgrounds near Dover Delaware

March 15, 2022 | More: Campgrounds

Dover, Delaware is the capital city of the state. Dover is also home to the state’s NASCAR track, the First State Heritage Park, and the Biggs Museum of American Art. It is also a NASCAR race-hosting city, with a historic 1791 Old States House in the heart of the city. There are many things to do in Dover, including the Air Mobility Command Museum, and the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge on Delaware Bay.

Dover is located in the state of Delaware, on the St. Jones River. It was first laid out in 1717 around the existing county courthouse. It was named for the English city of Dover, where the British king visited during the reign of Henry VIII. The town was incorporated in 1829, and was named a town in 1830. It was the state capital until 1933, when it was replaced by the Legislative Hall.

The center of town is known as The Green, and is the site of several historic events, including a popular wartime leader of the state during the American Revolution. While his grave is not located in Dover, his cenotaph can be found in Christ Episcopal Church cemetery near The Green. Dover is also home to the headquarters of the Delaware Supreme Court and the Kent County Courthouse. Dover is a great place for families to visit, and the many cultural opportunities make it an ideal destination for tourists.

Dover is not an extremely busy city. Parking in the downtown area is free, but is enforced Monday through Friday. If you need to park overnight, you may purchase a permit for $22. The permit is good for one year, and is valid for two hours on any given day. Otherwise, parking on the street costs $0.25 per hour, and is enforced from 7am to 5pm Monday-Friday. Evenings are free, so don’t worry about parking.

The age distribution of Dover is fairly similar to that of many other cities in the state. While there are some people who are younger, the median age is 33 years. The number of females is eighty and nine males are eighty-five. There are no state sales tax rates in Delaware, so you can save money by not paying state taxes. If you have a car, taxis are available. If you don’t drive, Uber or Lyft are the best options for getting around town.

Dover was established in 1683 and was named the county’s court town. A special commission of the Delaware General Assembly in 1717 laid out the town. In 1777, Dover was moved from New Castle because of its safe harbor from British raiders. In 1779, the state’s legislature met at various locations in the state, including Wilmington and Lewes. In 1781, Dover was named as the county seat of the state.
