The town is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering hiking, skiing, and biking trails. There are many things to do in Ellensburg, from visiting museums to enjoying the local food.

The town’s location made it an important hub for travelers to the Okanogan Valley and Yakima Valley. As a result, it saw a slow but steady growth. In 1870, cowboys A.J. Splawn and Ben Burch moved a 14 x 18 hewn log house to a nearby spot and opened a store. The store’s name was changed to “Robber’s Roost” to reflect the thievery that took place there. The city of Ellensburg’s first public gallery, Dick and Jane’s Spot, was incorporated in November of 1883. In 1886, a second Charter of Incorporation was enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Washington. A second election took place on February 26, 1886, and the city was officially incorporated. In July of that year, the Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in Ellensburg. The first telephone was installed in the city in 1889. The City of Helensburg had the potential to be the capital of the state if the fire had not spread.

The town of Ellensburg was once considered the state’s capital. A fire broke out on July 4, 1889, which destroyed most of the downtown. The fire started in a grocery store on the east side of Main Street, between Fourth and Fifth. The fire was quickly put out and brick buildings were built. The Davidson building is decorated with a mural of a phoenix rising from the ashes. As a result, the town became one of the most prosperous towns in the United States.
