April 14, 2022 | More: Campgrounds| Fort Davis Texas

You’ve heard about Fort Davis Texas, but where can you find it? This unincorporated community is the county seat of Jeff Davis County and has a population of 1,201 as of the 2010 census. What’s more, the community has a rich history. Here are some interesting facts about Fort Davis and why you should consider living in the area. Read on for more information! Read our Fort Davis Texas guide to find out more about this quaint Texas town.

In addition to its historic Fort Davis, you’ll want to check out the city’s many attractions. The Harvard Hotel, built in 1886, offers easy access to dining and shopping. The Sproul Ranch, founded in 1886, offers some of the best hunting in West Texas. While staying at the ranch, you can also take advantage of the hotel’s amenities, including a beautiful outdoor pool with spectacular views, a full-service meeting facility, and a dining room.

If you’re visiting Fort Davis, make sure you take a hike in the surrounding mountains. There are some challenging grades and invigorating uphills to keep you energized. Fort Davis National Historic Site offers several great parks and mountain trails. If you’re traveling with a young family, don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn more about the history of this fascinating Texas town. You’ll also be able to find some great birding tips and earn badges.

One of the most important parts of the Fort Davis history is its connection to African Americans. Fort Davis was home to the twenty-fourth and 25th U.S. Infantry, as well as the nine and tenth U.S. Cavalry. These black units served with distinction in the West during the Indian Wars. In the late nineteenth century, many of these soldiers became famous in movies, such as John Wayne riding his horse to Fort Davis.

In addition to being a national historic site, Fort Davis is also a beloved state park. The observatory in Fort Davis is one of the finest in the country. Thanks to the mountains’ mountain location, the city is mildly-cooled, and its average high in July is only 89 degrees. That makes it an ideal summer retreat. For those seeking a quiet escape, Fort Davis is an excellent place to visit. And, it’s also accessible from a variety of other parts of Texas.

In 1990, the city had a population of 1,212. There were sixteen businesses in the area. The Fort Davis Independent School District served the city. The population was small enough to attract tourists, but large enough to offer a good variety of things to do. For those with children, there’s even a local museum. A visit to Fort Davis will give you a taste of history and the Texas frontier. If you haven’t been there before, you’re missing out on a lot of the fun and history of the area!

While you’re in Fort Davis, make sure you take advantage of the surrounding scenic beauty by hiking the scenic Loop. This 74-mile tour of the Davis Mountains rivals the scenic route from Presidio to Terlingua. The road seems to go nowhere at first, but as you climb northward, the flat, sandy landscape becomes a mountainous landscape. Along the way, you’ll see the remains of two Oligocene volcanoes.
