15 Best Campgrounds near Kittery Maine

May 4, 2022 | More: Campgrounds| Kittery Maine

If you are planning to visit Kittery Maine, there are a few things that you must know. This coastal town is an ideal location for a vacation in New England. The town was once famous for shipbuilding, as the newly independent USA built ships on Seavey’s Island and Badger’s Island. It lies on the border of Maine and New Hampshire and is connected to them by bridges that cross the Piscataqua River. Although its population is below ten thousand, Kittery is known as an interesting shopping destination, offering malls and large department stores as well as boutique craft shops. Despite its small size, there are many activities that revolve around the Atlantic Ocean.

For an easy way to get information about Kittery, visit the information center. The center, which resembles a ski chalet, is conveniently located near the Piscataqua River Bridge. Visitors can get maps, brochures, and other travel information. This is the ideal first stop for anyone visiting Kittery. You can even take your questions to a local tour guide. The information center will be happy to provide you with all the information you need to plan your trip.

While visiting Kittery, make sure to visit the nearby beaches and state parks. A hike in the mountains or ocean can be an incredible experience. While visiting Kittery, you may want to visit Wolf Neck State Park, which is located nearby. You can hike and bike in the surrounding area, or climb Brandbury Mountain. If you want to explore the city, visit Portland. Portland has a vibrant waterfront and numerous craft breweries. There are also many smaller coastal fishing villages and lobster towns in the area.

For those interested in history, Kittery is also home to the oldest house in the country, the Dennett Garrison. It stands on land granted in 1661 to Christian Remick. Then, Christian Remick deeded the land to his son Isaac, who in turn sold it to John Dennett in 1698. John Dennett constructed the house between 1698 and 1720. The house was designated a garrison in 1720 to protect it from Indian raids.

One of the best things to do in Kittery Maine is to visit the Trading Post Fudge hall. Its mile-long retail space offers a wide variety of products, including clothing and jewelry. The hall is located on Route 95 and provides ample parking. It is a great place for retail therapy, and the local brewery, Tributary Brewing Company, is an industry veteran. In addition to the outlet mall, Kittery also has a variety of restaurants and breweries.

Fort McClary is one of Kittery’s most important historical sites. Standing on the Piscataqua River for nearly three centuries, it is one of the state’s most important historical sites. The fort’s Blockhouse was the last of its type to be constructed in Maine. After the Civil War, the Fort was rendered obsolete by the development of weapon technology. It still stands as an important memorial to the town’s history.
