Mashpee is a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. According to the United States Census Bureau, the population of Mashpee is 15,060. The town is the headquarters of the federally recognized Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Residents of the town are considered to be among the most prosperous in Massachusetts. Although the town is located on Cape Cod, it is not part of the larger Boston metropolitan area.

The Cape Cod Commission has long favored higher-density activity centers. The commission’s analysis has indicated the benefits of Mashpee Commons. Currently, the town has approval to build 300+ residential units in the town. Phase one of the village includes eight buildings, 52 residential units, and 12,000 square feet of shops. The village will take at least another decade to complete. But the community has made a strong statement about its future.

The town of Mashpee, Massachusetts is located on Cape Cod. It is bounded by Sandwich and Barnstable to the north and Nantucket Sound to the east and Falmouth to the west. The town is approximately 65 miles south-southeast of Boston and 110 miles from Providence. It is home to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. The town is home to the Wampanoag language immersion school.

The Mashpee area was settled by English colonists in 1658. The Wampanoag people were allowed to live in the English settlement by a missionary from Sandwich, Richard Bourne. In 1665, the Wampanoags established a court of law and conducted trials according to English custom. The government then threatened to send military forces to the area, which was largely ignored.

According to the census, the town’s population was spread out. Twenty-four percent of residents were under the age of eighteen, whereas four percent were 18-24 years old. Twenty-five percent were 45-64 years old and 18.6% were 65 and older. In addition to that, there were some single, married, and non-families. By 1670, Bourne had acquired the deed to Marshpee from the Quachatisset Indians.

South Cape Beach State Park is a barrier beach in Mashpee, Massachusetts that overlooks Nantucket Sound. Its boardwalk is ADA-accessible, and wheelchair-accessible beach chairs are available to rent on a first-come-first-serve basis. Discounted senior parking passes are available for visitors over sixty-two and a handicap license plate is accepted for free parking. South Cape Beach State Park has several hiking trails that begin at its parking lot. Dogs are prohibited from April to September.
