The California capital of Sacramento was founded in 1848 by Swiss immigrant John Sutter. Originally intended to be a farming community, it soon became a commercial, agricultural, and transportation hub during the California Gold Rush. Today, Sacramento is California’s oldest incorporated city. The city is also known by many nicknames, including the Capital City and the City of Trees. Among the most famous ones is Sutter’s Fort, which is still active today.

Campgrounds in Sacramento range from basic and rustic to luxurious and offer a variety of amenities. Nearby attractions include Folsom Lake, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and two national forests. Sacramento is also close to Lake Tahoe and Napa Valley, and is California’s first gold find.
