Originally known as Attakapas Parish, St. Martinville was founded in 1811 after Acadian exiles from Nova Scotia settled the area. The town is the parish seat and the birthplace of Cajun culture. The parish is the home to a number of interesting attractions, including the St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church, which dominates the town’s downtown square. Nearby is the African American Museum, which features a display of African artifacts, and the Evangeline Oak.

Located in the heart of southern Louisiana, St. Martinville has a rich history that dates back to French colonization. In the late 17th century, the French and Spanish explorers sailed into the bayou and found an abundance of wildlife and cypress trees. By the early 1800s, steamboat services began making the city accessible to the public. By this time, prominent Creole families made St. Martinville a fashionable summer retreat. Visitors could enjoy the sounds of brass bands on the church green.

The median household size in St Martinville is 2.50 people, and the median family size is 3.13.
