15 Best Campgrounds near Taos New Mexico

December 15, 2021 | More: Campgrounds| Taos New Mexico

Located in the high desert of northern New Mexico, Taos is a culturally diverse city with a rich history. The adobe buildings in Taos, including the historic Taos Pueblo, date back centuries. This long-established artist colony has many art galleries and museums, including the Taos Art Museum and Harwood Museum of Fine Arts. You can also take a walk through the city and explore the many ruins.

While you’re in town, visit the historic Taos Pueblo, a unique, over-1,000-year-old Native American pueblo. The Pueblo has buildings that date back to as far as 1000 A.D., making it one of the oldest continuously-inhabited communities in the United States. It is home to over 1900 people and continues to host traditional ceremonies and artisan works. Whether you’re a sports fan or an art lover, you’ll be sure to find something that interests you.

Whether you’re looking for art or history, Taos has plenty of museums to offer. The Kit Carson Home & Museum, built in 1825, tells the story of this American frontier expedition leader and his family. Millicent Rogers Museum is a beautiful collection of Southwestern artwork created by the artist herself. Her son turned her personal art collection into an exhibit of fourteen galleries. A trip to Taos is not complete without a visit to one of these popular local museums.

If you’re looking for art, Taos is a wonderful destination for a relaxing vacation. There are a variety of cultural venues to visit in the town. The Taos Society of Artists holds permanent and temporary exhibitions of local artwork and hosts related events throughout the year. The University of New Mexico’s Harwood Museum of Art is another excellent choice for an arts-related vacation. There, you’ll find paintings by some of the city’s most talented artists.

Taos’ cosmopolitan nature makes the town an ideal destination for those who love the outdoors. The town is known as an artist’s colony, but is also an outdoor activity hot spot. Hiking, fishing, and downhill skiing are some of the most popular activities in the area. Visiting the beautiful and historically significant sites of Taos is a great way to discover the rich history and culture of the area.

The Carson National Forest offers several mountain camping sites near the town. Twining Campground is close to the Rio Hondo hiking trail and provides access to Red River and Eagle Rock Lake. While Taos is a year-round destination, you should be prepared for the unpredictable weather conditions. Heavy rain can fall in the spring, and snow may last into June. Bring warm layers and good rain gear to keep yourself dry and warm. This is one of the best ways to experience Taos’ unique culture and history.
