If you’ve ever wondered about the differences between Thurmont and Emmitsburg Maryland, you’ve come to the right place. Both are located in Frederick County and are about 0.3 miles south of the Mason-Dixon line. This town is home to Mount St. Mary’s University, and has a vibrant arts and culture scene. You can visit the Emmitsburg Arts Center and tour the city on a bicycle if you want to get a true feel for the town.

In Thurmont, you can find two main parks and Mount Saint Mary’s College, which are both worth a visit. Emmitsburg is a thriving, “green” community and is also close to historic Gettysburg. You can also purchase transit passes, if you’d like to avoid the hassle of dealing with cash and paper tickets.

Organizers of the annual Thurmont and Emmitsburg Community Show met this week to start planning for the 66th Annual Thurmont and Emmitsburg Show, which will be held September 9-11 at the Catoctin High School. The committee’s new president is Rodman Myers. The Thurmont Grange, Catoctin FFA Chapter, and Alumni & Supporters will host this event.

Near Thurmont, you can enjoy a trip to Cunningham Falls State Park. This park features Maryland’s largest cascading waterfall. It is a protected park area located near Frederick Municipal Forest and Catoctin Mountain. There are several abandoned pioneer-era buildings scattered throughout the park. The 43-acre manmade lake, Big Hunting Creek, and Cunningham Falls are great places for outdoor recreation all year round. For anglers, the nearby Catoctin Breeze Vineyard is a great place to check out.

For local dining, make sure to visit the Mountain Gate Family Restaurant. It opened more than thirty years ago and quickly became a destination for many people. The restaurant was founded by the McCleaf family, who had previously owned a truck stop in the area. They wanted to offer a home-cooked meal at a reasonable price. Known for its home-cooked meals and homemade baked goods, this place is a popular dining option.

For commuters, the main highway in and out of Thurmont and Emmitsburg is U.S. Route 15 and Maryland Route 806. U.S. Route 15 is the main highway through Thurmont, providing access to Frederick and Gettysburg. Maryland Route 806 and Maryland Route 77 connect Thurmont to Keymar, Smithsburg, and Woodsboro. A quick trip between Thurmont and Emmitsburg should take about 9 minutes.

If you’re looking for a unique place to visit in this area, the Loys Station Covered Bridge is one of the most popular. It was built in 1843 and named after the nearby historic Western Maryland Railroad Station. In 1978, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sadly, the bridge was destroyed by arson in 1991, but a recent major rehabilitation has rebuilt it using surviving framing. The bridge now has a load limit of fifteen tons.
