The town had seven general merchandise stores within three blocks. In the early Civil War, Confederate guerrillas were active in the area. But in 1862, the Colorado Volunteers marched past Trinidad and destroyed Confederate hopes. In the same year, Felipe Baca had a bumper harvest. This encouraged him to bring twelve families from Mora, New Mexico to Trinidad. These newcomers had livestock in their wagons. Several new construction projects also took place downtown.
