When Virginia seceded from the Union on April 17, 1861, Williamsburg became a major strategic point. The Confederates recognized the strategic importance of the city and recruited African-Americans to help construct the city’s fortified line of fourteen redoubts. One of those was Fort Magruder, named for General John B. Magruder. The fort was the first one of its kind to protect the state from foreign invasion.

The George Wythe House is considered the finest private house in the city. The house includes formal gardens, a hedge maze, a kitchen, and a scullery. It was built in the mid-18th century for a prominent attorney, and has period furniture throughout. While the house has been restored, many of the original items still remain inside. Many of the old factory buildings are being turned into residential or non-industrial uses.
