15 Best Campgrounds near Woodstock Vermont

July 22, 2022 | More: Campgrounds| Woodstock Vermont

The quaint New England town of Woodstock, Vermont, is just the perfect destination for any traveler. First settled in 1768, the town grew to over 1600 people by the Revolutionary War. Today, the town is home to over 3,000 residents. The main attraction in the town is the Billings Farm and Museum, but you’ll find plenty of other places to visit, including quaint inns, art galleries, and fine dining. In the central village green, you’ll find many Greek revival, Georgian, and Federal style homes.

The nearest major highway to Woodstock is Interstate 91, which exits at Hartford/Windsor. From here, follow Route 12 north for eight miles until it merges with Route 4 west. The town of Woodstock is located three miles from Route 4 west. While driving, make sure to take the time to stop and explore the historic sites along the way. Make sure to bring your camera or a notebook if you wish to capture memories of your Vermont visit.

If you’re traveling to Woodstock, consider taking in the area’s covered bridges. Two of the oldest covered bridges in the country are found in Taftsville and the Woodstock Middle covered bridge on Mountain Ave. Both span the Ottauquechee River. A classic example of covered bridges, these structures were constructed with traditional materials and use wooden pegs instead of nails. The Middle Covered Bridge is the most iconic of the three, spanning over the Ottauquechee River.

In the area, there are plenty of great places to eat in the town. The Skinny Pancake and the Mon Vert Café are a must-visit for anyone. The famous Woodstock Vermont food scene is one of the best, so make sure you have an appetite before you go. While you’re there, take a look at the various lodging options available in the area. Be sure to book your room early to avoid disappointment.

While you’re in the town, consider visiting the Billings Farm and Museum, which was founded in 1871. While best known for breeding Jersey dairy cows, the farm also emphasizes farming education. You’ll also find exhibits here that detail the life of a Vermont farmer. There’s a restored 1890 farm manager’s home, a riverside path, and a seasonal garden. The farm offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and a self-guided tour of the farm.

When to Visit: Fall foliage in Vermont is at its peak in early October. The peak occurs for a few days to a week. Though the fall foliage season is best viewed at the peak, the weeks leading up to it are also spectacular. Make sure you visit the area before or near the peak of the foliage to experience the most beautiful color. It will be worth the trip, whether for work or pleasure. When visiting Woodstock, be sure to plan your trip around the fall foliage!

If you’re planning a camping trip in Woodstock, you can also choose a campground near the town. The Quechee Gorge Trail starts near the Dewey Mills Pond boat landing and follows the Ottauquechee River to the Quechee Gorge. It is a 2.7-mile round trip hike that’ll reward you with a beautiful view of the area. A great place to take a picnic lunch, boating, or fishing, this campground is an ideal spot to stay near the action.
