The first summer of Baird’s research at Woods Hole consisted of collecting large numbers of fish for study. He studied their distribution, diet, spawning, and rate of growth. The research also included recording the natural history of fish populations. The team also worked closely with the owners of local fish traps, giving them permission to collect specimens. In the end, Baird’s expedition produced 106 species of fish for the National Museum. Twenty of these species were never known to exist anywhere else.

Located on the shores of Cape Cod, Woods Hole is a beautiful town for visiting the natural environment. The town’s long history of whale fishing made it one of the most important ports of call in the United States.
