15 Best things to Do in Flathead Lake Area Montana

April 11, 2022 | More: Things to Do

You can find great waterfront values on Flathead Lake. In fact, the inventory has declined significantly over the last two years. If you’re looking for waterfront property in Montana, you’ll want to consider buying or renting a lakefront property. There are a variety of different activities for all ages, from fishing and boating to sightseeing and golfing. In addition to water sports, Flathead Lake has many unique attractions, such as an annual fireworks show.

When you’re in town, enjoy some local cuisine, and explore local shops and restaurants. If you’re a beer lover, head to one of the local microbreweries, including Glacier Brewing – Polson. There’s also Mission Mountain Winery in Dayton. You can also play golf at Polson Bay Golf Course or Eagle Bend in Bigfork. A visit to the area’s many wineries and farmers’ markets will enhance your experience and give you a deeper appreciation of nature.

The area surrounding Flathead Lake has a rich history. Native Americans have lived near the lake for at least 5,000 years. The Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d’Orielle tribes hunted deer and gathered berries and camas roots. After the arrival of the Shoshone in the 1700s, the Kootenai met with explorers Lewis and Clark and began to use horses and white men. By the 1805 expedition, European settlers had met the Kootenai, who were now known as Flatheads. Today, you can find out more about these native people at The Peoples Center, 8 miles south of Polson.

The largest island on Flathead Lake is called Wild Horse Island, and it’s a day-use state park and is home to a herd of wild horses. Historically, the Salish-Kootenai people used the island as a pasture and a place to protect their horses from other tribes. You can reach Wild Horse Island by boat or charter a cruise. Whether you’re renting a cabin or a camper, Wild Horse Island is a great spot for outdoor activities.

You’ll also find great fishing opportunities on Flathead Lake. Fishing on Flathead Lake can be excellent, and you can expect to catch rainbow trout and lake trout. Other species that you can catch include pike, yellow perch, whitefish, bass, and kokanee salmon. You can catch a twenty-pound lake trout, but it’s most common to catch three to eight-pound fish.

The Flathead Lake Area is a wonderland of contrasts. With its massive surface area, Flathead Lake changes rapidly from calm to turbulent. In summer, the lake’s water is turquoise, and in winter, it reflects snow-capped mountains. No matter what time of year you visit, you’re sure to find something to satisfy your interest. In the winter, you can ice skate on Flathead Lake. And you won’t regret it.

As far as fish go, the Flathead Lake area is home to several endangered species. In fact, the area is home to many of the country’s most iconic birds. The American white pelican, grizzly bears, and gray wolves all live in the Flathead Lake forests. But these animals are not the only ones that live on Flathead Lake. They are also home to several species of lake trout, including the famous bull trout.
