If you’re planning a trip to Oregon, consider visiting the town of Florence. This small city sits at the mouth of the Siuslaw River. It’s home to the Steller sea lions and the restored Heceta Head Lighthouse. Shoppers will love exploring the historic Old Town district. Across the river is the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. It’s not all about the city, though. Many attractions are located on the coast.

There are many things to do in Florence with your family. The city is located near the Pacific Ocean and sits at the mouth of the Siuslaw River. Despite the town’s small size, it has a wide range of attractions that will keep everyone entertained. Visit the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, the Florence Pioneer Museum, and the Siuslaw River Bridge, and don’t miss out on the Sea Lion Caves. For a more leisurely day out, take in the many art galleries and craft stores.

Just 11 miles from Florence is the Sea Lion Caves, which are America’s largest sea cave. These are home to Stellar sea lions and are best seen during breeding season. Be sure to ask before buying tickets, because you may be surprised by a sight that a few sea lions are living inside of a cave. For families with young children, this is a great activity. If you’re an animal lover, this is a must-see.

The Siuslaw Pioneer Museum is located in the historic Old Town area. This museum features authentic historical displays, photographs, and insight on the city’s founding. A self-guided historical walking tour of Florence begins here, and takes you to 21 historic sites around Old Town. Several of these sites have picnic tables, benches, and wheelchair-accessible pathways. You can enjoy the scenery, watch boats go by, and even watch the double-leaf bascule open and close.

The Waterfront Depot Restaurant offers fine seafood dishes and delicious cocktails, as well as a great wine list. Be sure to make reservations, as some places are closed during global health issues. Despite the small town feel, this city offers plenty of things to do while visiting Florence, Oregon. You can explore the beautiful Laurel Street district, and even stroll along the riverfront. During your trip, don’t forget to check out the many pubs and restaurants in Florence.

For outdoor activities, Florence has plenty of hiking trails and beaches. The John Dellenback Dunes Trail is a great place to go hiking, but the winds can get a bit strong. The 5.5-mile loop is great for a half-day hike and is located just a few miles north of downtown Florence. Whether you want to enjoy the view of the Siuslaw River, or stroll along the historic downtown, this scenic trail is great for you.

The old town of Florence is filled with unexpected galleries and quaint shops. Nearby is the burgeoning antique district. You’ll also find a military heritage museum, a historical museum, and a great golf course. You’ll find something to keep you entertained in the evenings at the Old Town Inn.
