Fort Davis, Texas, is a census-designated place in Jeff Davis County, Texas, United States. According to the 2010 census, its population was 1,201. Although located at the foot of the Davis Mountains, Fort Davis, Texas enjoys a mild climate. As a result, it’s best visited in the warmer months of May to September. However, since the population is small, lodging in Fort Davis is limited, so booking your lodging ahead of time is highly recommended. You can even enjoy hiking, skiing, and biking in the nearby Davis Mountains State Park. And if you’re a history buff, the Fort Davis Historical Museum and McDonald Observatory are sure to be a highlight of your visit.

If you’re a history buff, you can check out the Fort’s National Historic Site, which dates back to 1886. The fort is nestled on a side road, alongside small businesses and tourist attractions. Surrounding the fort are dark volcanic rocks. The buildings are well-separated from each other and dwarfed by the sprawling grassy terrain. The entrance road crosses an old dirt track, which is still used to transport travelers to Fort Davis. The historic site is 200 miles from San Antonio and 400 miles from Franklin.

While Fort Davis is now a National Park, it served as an active military post in the 1850s. It is the most intact frontier military post in the Southwest. Today, the Fort is home to over 400 species of birds. If you’re in Fort Davis, be sure to check out its visitors’ center! This is a fascinating history lesson in itself. You won’t regret visiting! And while you’re there, check out the Buffalo Soldiers Museum for even more interesting historical facts.

The town of Fort Davis is the highest town in Texas, at 5,050 feet. It’s located about 170 miles south of Midland and 220 miles southeast of El Paso. It’s the gateway to Big Bend National Park. You can explore this historic town on foot or by horseback. And, if you like live music, you’ll love the local pubs and bars. And if you enjoy live music, the historic Fort Davis stage station is a great place to explore.

Located within the migratory path of many hummingbirds, Fort Davis is home to more species of hummingbirds than any other town in the Lone Star State. If you’re interested in birding, you’ll also find plenty of opportunities at the Davis Mountains Hummingbird Festival, held every other August. You can enjoy lectures and banding sessions by renowned ornithologists and learn more about this fascinating bird.
