The town of Fryeburg, Maine is a small hamlet in Oxford County. The town has a population of 3,369 as of the 2020 census. Many residents are students of the Fryeburg Academy, a semi-private preparatory school. The International Musical Arts Institute is also located in Fryeburg. The school was founded in 1891. The music program is a renowned success in the community and is offered in both English and French.

The town was originally a frontier outpost. However, as one of the earliest settlements in the White Mountains, it grew to be a prosperous agricultural center. The town’s great soil and abundant water supply helped make it an agricultural hub. In 1766, the first grist mill was established using water power from the Saco River. In the next few decades, other mills were built, producing lumber, harness, tinware, cheese, and canned vegetables. Eventually, the town became a popular tourist destination when the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad began operating through the region. In the following years, the U.S. Route 302 was designated as the Theodore Roosevelt International Highway. In 1935, this highway was re-branded as United States Route 302.

Today, tourism in Fryeburg is thriving, with a vibrant downtown, charming shops, and historic buildings. Visitors can enjoy a day trip from Portland to explore the town. The town’s proximity to New Hampshire and New England allows you to take in the beautiful natural surroundings. While in Fryeburg, Maine, don’t forget to hike the famous Jockey Cap. It is a 15 minute hike from Quinn’s Jockey Cap Motel and Country Store.

The town has an impressive history. The Fryeburg Academy, the town’s oldest school, was founded in 1792. It has one of the oldest schools in the country, and Daniel Webster taught at the school before starting his career as a statesman. In 1924, Dr. Abraham Krasker founded the Forest Acres Camp for Boys and Girls, and his wife, Gertrude, created the Indian Acres Camp For Boys. These two institutions are both educational and fun.

The Fryeburg Fair is a year-round event in the town. The Fryeburg Fair is Maine’s largest agricultural fair, with more than 3,000 animals. The town’s historic buildings are home to a variety of local food and beer. The 185-acre fairgrounds hosts a variety of events, including live music. It is an excellent place to celebrate a family reunion or honeymoon.
