If you love art, culture and history, you can’t go wrong with the state capital of Hartford. Hartford dates back to 1635 and was home to the city’s center of abolitionism during the 19th century. The city also produced Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin, an infamous slave story. By the end of the Civil War, Hartford had become the richest city in the country, thanks to Colt’s Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company. Though the city is no longer the industrial powerhouse it once was, Hartford still has a vibrant cultural scene and some great parks and museums.

Those who are into performing arts should check out the Hartford Symphony. This musical group is entering its 75th season this year. While touring Hartford, be sure to visit the State Capitol Building. This state-owned building houses the Connecticut State Senate, House of Representatives, and the Governor of the state. This impressive building is built on the site of Trinity College. Inside, you’ll find Civil War artifacts and a beautiful gold-leaf dome. There are free self-guided tours available Monday through Friday. Private group tours can be arranged for groups of up to six people.

The Connecticut Historical Society is another museum worth visiting in Hartford. This historical society, founded in 1825, is housed in a 1928 Colonial Revival building. It contains over four million historical objects, including textiles, clothing, and diaries. It also features an extensive exhibit with over 500 historic images. It also offers educational programs and free admission to all visitors. Its collections will provide visitors with a rich understanding of the state’s past.
