15 Best things to Do in Lopez Island

July 29, 2022 | More: Lopez Island| Things to Do

For those looking for solitude and peace, Lopez Island is the perfect destination. This island boasts eight county parks and one state park. It also has a vibrant community center, including a library, historical museum, and Woodmen Hall. There are also several churches on the island, and the town has its own radio station. If you’re unsure what to do on Lopez Island, here are some tips:

Pedal your bike on the island! The ferry service allows bikes onboard and many bike rentals are available. In July, Lopez Island hosts its annual Tour de Lopez, a fundraising event reminiscent of the Tour de France. You’ll have the opportunity to meet locals while cycling the island. It’s a great way to get to know the locals. You can even bring a picnic lunch! If you’re staying on the island, consider spending a day or two at the beach.

Try out the local cuisine. The cuisine on Lopez is delicious, with delicious dishes served on beautifully plated plates. You can also get a burger or fried chicken sandwich, the two most popular dishes on the island. You should also check out the Shark Reef Sanctuary, which boasts dramatic landscapes and views of neighboring islands. A deli is also available for those looking for lunch on Lopez. But if you’re on a budget, stick to the local markets!

Hike on the Island: If you’re in the mood for a hike, check out the south-west tip. The sheer bluffs are the perfect place for stretching your legs while you enjoy the ocean view. It’s an easy and short hike – just three miles round-trip, with about 50 feet of elevation gain. The most popular spot for orcas is near the top of Lopez Hill. Alternatively, you can take a short, paved trail up the hill and follow it to the rocky knoll below.

You can also see Bald eagles in the area. This majestic bird is a common sight in western Washington, but I’ve only seen it on Lopez Island during a mating ritual. The eagles on Lopez Island are majestic, and free fall through the sky with their talons interlocked. If you’re lucky enough to spot one, you’ll never regret a visit to this island.

In the early nineteenth century, there were two settlers on Lopez. James and Amelia Davis, both British citizens, arrived on the island in 1869. Their sister Amelia stayed behind to care for the children while their fathers went to the mainland. The couple eventually had nine children together. Their descendants live on the island today. The Davises’ home served as a social center for the island. They also maintained a library and a Sunday school on the island.

San Juan Transit used to provide service to Lopez Island, but that service is no longer available. A good alternative is San Juan Island Transportation. Cycling on Lopez is a great way to explore the island. The island’s relatively flat terrain makes it an ideal destination for cyclists of all skill levels. In addition to being flat, Lopez Island has few cars. A bike cab will get you around the island in no time. It’s not a road ride, but it’s a scenic way to get around.
