15 Best things to Do in Mashpee Massachusetts

May 18, 2022 | More: Mashpee Massachusetts| Things to Do

Those who live in Mashpee, Massachusetts will find plenty to do while they’re in the area. The area is home to two elementary schools, one middle school, and a high school. The middle school and high school share the same administration, but have separate wings for seventh and eighth grade students. The middle school houses the “Technology Center of Excellence” and has won awards for its innovative course offerings and industry education.

The town also offers two mini-golf courses, the Popponesset Marketplace and Mashpee Commons. For those looking for a place to hang out during their visit, the town’s restaurants and grocery stores cater to a wide range of tastes and budgets. Those who are visiting Mashpee should bring their children for a day or two to visit the Cape Cod Children’s Museum. However, keep in mind that the museum is only open a few days per week, and it is not yet a great option for families who need to plan their travels around the town’s summer months.

The town has an active downtown, and its residents have turned it into a thriving hub of activity. What was once just a pass town is now a stand-alone destination. Visitors to Mashpee will find a vibrant downtown bursting with activity. For those who are familiar with the Wampanoag culture, the town’s Old Indian Meeting House is one of the oldest Native American churches in the U.S. Built in 1684, this church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The town of Mashpee is home to four large freshwater ponds on Cape Cod. Residents can enjoy fantastic fishing and outdoor recreation at its many ponds. The town is also home to the Lowell Holly Reservation. The town’s Native American roots can be traced back to 1658, when English colonists allowed the Wampanoag to settle in the area. The Wampanoag soon began to govern themselves through the use of English customs and laws. The town eventually became home to the largest Indian reservation in the state.

In 1763, the British Crown designated the town of Mashpee as a plantation and appointed a committee of five European-Americans to govern the community. The town’s Mashpee Indians were outnumbered by the white settlers, and the governor threatened to retaliate with military force if they did not comply. It was this kind of conflict that led to the development of the town’s Mashpee Commons.
