15 Best things to Do in Monhegan Island Maine

May 20, 2022 | More: Monhegan Island Maine| Things to Do

If you are interested in experiencing a unique vacation experience, you may want to visit Monhegan Island, Maine. This undeveloped island is only 10 miles from the mainland and is home to about 70 residents. There are no streets or cars on the island, so getting around the island is a breeze. You can explore the island’s 12 miles of trails on foot or bike and sample local fare like lobster scrambled eggs.

Monhegan is home to many activities, including hiking, biking, swimming, and visiting the state aquarium. Guests can also enjoy the island’s spectacular scenery. Several activities are available for the whole family, from sport-fishing to kayaking. It is impossible to see everything in one day, so be sure to plan plenty of time for exploring. There are several places to visit, including the lighthouse. Here, you can also see the most breathtaking views of Maine’s coastline.

The Old Fort Western is another historical site that you shouldn’t miss. This historic fort was built in 1854 and is an important site to preserve. If you are into botany, you may enjoy visiting the Thuya Garden on Mount Desert Island. This is a great spot for a family outing or for a romantic weekend getaway. While you are on the island, you can relax in the Hamilton House. And while you’re there, you can enjoy a Maine waterfront wedding in one of the most idyllic locations.

Inn: The most well-known hotel on the island is the historic Island Inn. Here, you’ll enjoy the quintessential Maine hospitality. The main house of the Island Inn dates back over two centuries. First built in 1816, it was referred to as “The Pink House” and expanded several times in the early twentieth century. Innkeepers have worked hard to maintain the house and make it as comfortable as possible.

Hiking: A great way to enjoy the island is to take advantage of the island’s hiking trails. There are nearly 25 miles of paved trails that connect the island’s campgrounds, forests, and Historic Landmark District. You’ll get to experience spectacular ocean views and starry nights as you explore the island’s lush, wooded hills. You can even bring your dog along with you if you’re traveling with your pet, but be sure to keep them on a leash!

If you’d like to learn more about American art, you might want to visit the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. This museum opened in the year 1953 and features hundreds of pieces by American and European artists. It’s the crown jewel of the Arts District. There’s plenty to see in this museum – from works of American artists to those by European wartime painters. The art museum is free on Fridays. You can also visit the town of Ogunquit to check out the local art scene.
