15 Best things to Do in Newport Oregon

May 31, 2022 | More: Newport Oregon| Things to Do

If you’re thinking about visiting Newport Oregon, you’ve probably been wondering what to do in the city. The coastal town’s rich history dates back to the mid-1800s, when settlers found the oyster beds in Yaquina Bay. After finding great profits shipping oysters across the west coast, the town’s Bayfront was incorporated in 1882. By the early 1900s, large European communities had moved to the area and fish processing plants had sprung up all over town. Fishing remained the number one industry in Newport until the 1930s, when the city’s Bayfront was redeveloped and the Yaquina Bay Bridge was built. Still, the Newport area is a popular destination for fishermen and cravers, with a vibrant nightlife and art galleries.

The sea lion docks are a popular tourist attraction in the town, where you can watch these adorable creatures as they swim around the bay. In July, these playful animals swim to the nearby Channel Islands to breed and lay eggs. If you’re visiting Newport during this time, you’ll be able to see them interacting with each other and basking in the sun on the docks. It’s a quintessential Newport experience.

A visit to Newport Oregon isn’t complete without visiting the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. The tallest lighthouse in the state, Yaquina Head Light is famously haunted. Another popular attraction in Newport is the Oregon Coast Aquarium, which has a variety of marine exhibits. No matter what you’re interested in, you’re sure to find something interesting to do in Newport. It’s the perfect location for a vacation.

Another popular tourist attraction in Newport is the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center. This museum was originally a nightclub, but it has been converted into a history museum since 2013. Visitors will find many interesting exhibits, including a “Then and Now” exhibit that compares different areas of the city in the 1940s to present day. Artifacts from shipwrecks are also on display at the museum. The Pacific Maritime Heritage Center is a great way to see how Newport grew over the centuries.

If you’re interested in marine life, the Hatfield Marine Science Center is another great option. This facility, operated by Oregon State University, offers year-round tours that teach visitors about local marine life and feature live sea animals. Visitors can even view giant pacific octopus, jellyfish, and sharks. Children will enjoy the interactive exhibits and even build structures out of Legos. A visit to this museum is sure to entertain the whole family.

Another fun thing to do in Newport is go for a day trip to Seal Rock State Park, which is located along the coast. Seal Rock State Park is a beautiful area that is home to many different types of wildlife. During your day in Newport, don’t miss the fun at the Enchanted Forest. There are rides and workshops to do, and the park also features a beautiful waterfall and a fairytale theme. While there, you can experience the city’s rich history by stepping out of your hotel.
