15 Best things to Do in Providence Rhode Island

June 13, 2022 | More: Things to Do

If you’re visiting Rhode Island, you’ll need to plan your vacation around Providence, RI. This vibrant, compact city is home to a diverse and eccentric population. Founded by Puritan Massachusetts dissidents, Providence is known for its eclectic mix of history, culture, and contemporary politics. From historic landmarks to artistic highlights, you’ll find a lot to enjoy. The following are just a few reasons to plan your next vacation in Providence.

The city’s charming downtown area is home to many historic buildings, including Beaux-Arts, Art Deco, and late Victorian architecture. One of the most iconic structures is the 11 Westminster Street building, which looks like the Daily Planet. It was built in 1828 and has been on the National Historic District Registry since 1976. It is associated with the Rhode Island School of Design and is home to the state’s largest art museum. It is open every day except for the first and third Thursday of the month.

Downtown hotels are another popular choice in Providence. The Providence Marriott Downtown has a convenient location between downtown and “The Hill.” The hotel’s elegant rooms offer views of the city’s skyline. If you’d rather stay away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area, you can stay at the Graduate Providence, a historic landmark. It features an Art Deco lobby with a grand staircase. Rooms at this hotel are spacious, comfortable, and offer king beds. There is ample parking available and a restaurant and bar on site. AQUA offers a great place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. The hotel also has two swimming pools – one indoor and one outdoor.

If you’re looking for a fun place to visit with your children in Providence, the Children’s Museum is a must-see. This museum celebrates a broad range of learning styles and abilities, and features play-based exhibits that foster active play. Its museum is ideal for children ages one to 11 years old, and offers a fun environment where learning is fun. If you’re looking for affordable homes in Providence, consider purchasing a home in the city’s Hope neighbourhood.

Another must-see attraction in Providence is the RISD Museum. The RISD Museum, pronounced RIZ-dee, contains more than a hundred thousand works of art, including works by famous masters. The Grand Gallery is vast and features Impressionist paintings, costume exhibits, and even an Egyptian mummy. There’s a place for art lovers of all ages in Providence. So much to see, so little time!

The Providence River runs through the heart of the city, making it ideal for strolling. If you’re more adventurous, you can also rent a kayak and take a narrated tour of the river. Alternatively, you can opt for a gondola ride during the Waterfire festival. During your stay in Providence, you can enjoy lunch by the water at the Providence River Social. If you’d prefer fine dining, you can head to Cafe Nuovo.
