A major city in south central Texas, San Antonio boasts an interesting colonial history. The 18th century Spanish mission known as the Alamo, preserved as a museum, marks the famous battle for Texan independence from Mexico. Other attractions include the River Walk, a pedestrian promenade, and the 750-foot Tower of the Americas. Visitors will not be disappointed with their visit to San Antonio. Fort Sam Houston was a permanent army post located about two and a half miles from the Alamo. The fort featured an army hospital and headquarters as well as sixty other structures. In 1890, the Fort was renamed Fort Sam Houston. The city played an important role during the Spanish-American War. The Alamo was the site where the First United States Volunteer Cavalry mobilized. The Fort supplied troops for the army. These soldiers, later known as the “Rough Riders,” were led by Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt.

The Smithsonian Museums: This is the place to visit if you want to get a taste of Mexican and Texan culture. You can learn about ancient Roman and Egyptian artifacts in these galleries. If you are an art lover, you may want to take a stroll through the Japanese Tea Garden on the grounds of Brackenridge Park. The garden has been carefully restored, so it’s a perfect place for a picnic or a relaxing drink.

The River Walk: The River Walk is one of the best places to spend an afternoon. If you have time to spare, this is a great way to explore the city and its historic sites.
