When you think of the Sierra Nevada mountains, you probably picture the majestic Yosemite National Park. While it is true that Yosemite is a national park, there are many activities you can do within the park, as well. From hiking to horseback riding, you’ll find something for everyone. Yosemite is also the perfect place for a yoga or contemplative art retreat, as well as a fine wine and massage. This Californian park is home to wildlife, giant sequoia trees, and giant granite monoliths.
In addition to the famous Yosemite Valley, the park contains the Hetch Hetchy Mountain Reservation, which is like California’s version of a fjord. The valley floor is mirrored exactly like Yosemite Valley, and John Muir once referred to it as a “mini-Yosemite Valley.” In the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake, a number of fires broke out in San Francisco. As a result, the city needed a better source of water. To that end, it dammed the Tuolumne River.
Visiting the park during the fall or winter can also make the experience more enjoyable. While many hiking trails in the park close during winter, you can enjoy the views of snowfalls while ice skating in Curry Village. There are festivals that occur throughout the year, and you can even take advantage of these to enjoy Yosemite at its most scenic and memorable time. And if you visit during the fall, don’t forget to bring a camera!
If you don’t want to drive, the best way to get around the park is by public transit. The YARTS system is a convenient way to travel car-free through the park, and tickets include park admission. Children five and under ride free of charge with an adult. There are also routes that connect to the park from the four gateway towns, but these routes operate during summer. It is recommended to book your trip well in advance to avoid crowds.
Ansel Adams Gallery features the works of famous photographer Ansel Adams. The Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Valley has a wide variety of Adams’ photographs, and many local artists sell prints and original paintings. If you want to learn more about the park’s history, you can visit the Pioneer Yosemite History Center in the Wawona District. The museum also houses a 13.8 pound nugget of gold, which was found in an old mine.
The infamous Half Dome is also a must-see in the park, as it takes hikers up the bald back side of this formation. While it’s not for everyone, it’s definitely one of the most spectacular hikes in the park. Another must-do is El Capitan, a 3,000-foot sheer rock face. A must-see for all visitors!
The most popular section of Yosemite is the Yosemite Valley. This section features many big-name tourist attractions and is accessible via the Glacier Road or Tioga Road. The Glacier Road offers stunning views of the valley. The Tioga Road crosses the valley in an east-west direction and provides access to less popular hiking trails. During summer, Tioga Road is open earlier than Glacier Road.
