The town of Espanola is located primarily in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, and is adjacent to Santa Fe County. The town was originally settled as a railroad village, and it took its name from an old Indian town, San Juan de los Caballeros. In 1925, the city became a incorporated city. In 2004, it was one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Today, the town is home to more than 5,000 people.
In the early 1800s, the town was still known as Vigil’s Meadow. However, railroad workers dubbed the town “La Espanola” and it eventually became a small railroad town. Throughout the 1800s, many businesses were located along Paseo de Onate. This section of town is being revitalized by the Main Street Program.
