Before the city was developed, it was mostly a factory town. In 1888, the Pacific Guano Works filed for bankruptcy, and soon, wealthy New York and Boston lawyers started flocking to the town. Today, you can find a number of historic buildings in Woods Hole.

The residential areas of Woods Hole are charming and feature tree-lined streets and heritage homes. These elements create a real Cape Cod feel. The earliest settlers of Woods Hole Massachusetts were whalers. Many of them processed the bones and oil from the whales to sell. After the whale-fishing industry ceased to be profitable, the town began to turn its wharf into a center for oceanographic research. In 1927, the National Academy of Sciences began commissioning oceanographic research. And in 1873, the first whalers arrived in Woods Hole.

The waterfront town of Woods Hole is a popular tourist destination. Several attractions in Woods Hole include historical lighthouses, lively aquariums, specialty museums, and a number of natural wonders. The town offers visitors the chance to observe marine life, explore historic landmarks, and enjoy scenic cruises. In fact, the Steamship Authority – Martha’s Vineyard (SAMSV) was founded here in 1960, and is one of the best ferry services in the country.
