15 Classic Souvenirs from Gallup New Mexico

April 21, 2022 | More: Souvenirs

A trip to Gallup, New Mexico is not complete without visiting the Red Rock Park, a historic archaeological park featuring the remains of the Anasazi civilization. You can also visit the Red Rock Museum, focusing on the town’s heritage and displaying silver and pottery made by Anasazi people. Gallup also features a vibrant arts and crafts district with several art and craft shops. Native American handicrafts are particularly popular in the town, so make sure to buy them while you’re here.

If you are looking for unique Native American souvenirs, the town’s trading post is the perfect place to shop. More than 95 percent of items on display at Richardson’s Cash Pawn are live pawns. These pieces are not for sale, but are being sold as collateral for a loan. In the rare case of a “dead pawn,” the owner has abandoned the item, and the trader is selling it to recoup the money lent to him.

Hollywood film stars also stayed in Gallup, making it an ideal destination for a getaway. In the 1940s and 1950s, Gallup was the filming location for several westerns. Many famous movie stars filmed here, including John Wayne. The El Rancho, which offers overnight accommodations, is an historic Route 66 motel whose walls are covered with movie memorabilia. Over 90 restaurants and 30 hotels make it a great place to stay while visiting Gallup.

Whether you’re hungry for a light dinner or a hearty brunch, there’s a great restaurant in Gallup to meet your needs. The Route 66 Junkyard Brewhouse is a great place to sample local beer, as well as a nice atmosphere. You can also stop in the El Cafecito, located at 820 E. Highway 66 in the town’s downtown. There are also several restaurants in the town that serve breakfast and lunch.

Route 66 is the main thoroughfare in America. Almost two-thousand-five-hundred miles of Route 66 pass through the state. Along the way, you’ll find abandoned tourist attractions, state parks, trading posts, and more. You’ll be in the heart of the Old West as you follow the historic highway. While you’re here, don’t forget to stop and take in the landscape.
