15 Classic Souvenirs from Georgetown South Carolina

April 25, 2022 | More: Georgetown South Carolina| Souvenirs

If you’ve ever wondered what life is like in Georgetown South Carolina, you’re not alone. Georgetown is the third-oldest town in South Carolina and the county seat of Georgetown County, which is located in the Lowcountry. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 9,163.

This picturesque city offers visitors a respite from everyday life. If you’re looking for something different than the usual tourist attractions, you can explore Georgetown’s historic homes, exquisite churches, and lush greenery. The third-oldest city in South Carolina, Georgetown is home to outstanding 18th and 19th-century architecture. You can explore these buildings on a self-guided tour or join an organized tour. There are also several historic churches and synagogues located throughout the city.

Despite its historic past, the town has preserved much of its heritage. The second-oldest Jewish community in South Carolina founded a Jewish cemetery in the town, which contains a number of historical graves. The older graves are in the center, facing east and toward Jerusalem, whereas later graves are laid perpendicular to the wrought-iron boundaries. You can access the cemetery via 400 Broad Street. There’s also a synagogue in Georgetown.

For an unforgettable experience, you can take a stroll through the harbor. If you’re visiting during summer, take a break from shopping and enjoy a delicious ice cream cone at the Georgetown Hot Dog and Ice Cream Parlor, located above the main shopping district. The city has many fun activities to enjoy, including camping and fishing. Visitors can also take part in daily nature programs or even make a visit to one of the many antique stores.

Rice production in Georgetown was crippled during the Civil War, when non-slavery-based economies began to compete with the local rice industry. These farmers used heavy equipment, but the coastal soil couldn’t support these machines. As a result, Georgetown’s last commercial rice harvest took place in 1919. The town bounced back from this economic setback by attracting other industries. The timber industry, paper industry, and steel industries grew in the area for much of the twentieth century.

If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, then Georgetown is the place for you. Located on the edge of Winyah Bay, Georgetown is a small coastal city that has a rich history. Enjoy the many shops and restaurants, scenic waterfront views, and southern charm in this charming seaport city. Georgetown is a great place for a family vacation. There are many restaurants, coffee shops, and art galleries to visit and explore.

A local history museum in Georgetown is worth a visit. The Hobcaw Barony Museum offers fascinating artifacts, including a candle-shape molding. Tour guides will point out interesting items while explaining the history of Georgetown. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. The museum also offers photography classes and weddings. You can’t go wrong with a visit to the Hobcaw Barony Museum.
