15 Classic Souvenirs from Gloucester Massachusetts

April 26, 2022 | More: Gloucester Massachusetts| Souvenirs

You might not realize it, but Gloucester has a thriving art scene, attracting many famous plein air artists over the years. From Edward Hopper to Winslow Homer, the town has attracted a variety of notable artists to its shores. Authors Louisa May Alcott and Rudyard Kipling often frequented Gloucester. Today, this town’s art colony is a vibrant community, with many artists maintaining studios on the town’s Rocky Neck. Strolling along the shoreline or taking a break from a work in progress is a pleasure, with plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby to satisfy your craving.

The town’s history is marked by two pivotal events. In 1637, nine women from Gloucester are accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials. In 1642, the town establishes its first school, where Thomas Rigg serves as the schoolmaster. A month later, in July, the town’s first church is built in a meeting house, and three more are built on Lincoln Street and Washington Street. In 1775, the town is home to eight militiamen: Jacob Davis, Vincent Davis, Thomas Kent, and Hugh Howe. In 1776, the town has a large population of 700, and Ebenezer Babson witnesses Indian and French soldiers in the area, including mysterious guns.

In the same month, the town is host to several music festivals. One of the biggest annual events is St. Peter’s Fiesta, sponsored by the Italian-American community, which celebrates the saint’s feast day. Highlights of this event include the blessing of the fleet and a greasy pole competition. Attracting tourists to the town each year is a must. Its vibrant cultural life makes for an enjoyable getaway from a busy lifestyle.

For a more cultural experience, the town has a number of museums. The Cape Ann Historical Association and the Maritime Gloucester Aquarium are located in the main downtown area. If you have time, you should visit all three. Gloucester is the perfect destination for a day of sightseeing. The city is also home to several historic landmarks. You can’t miss the city’s quaint harbor. You won’t regret the decision to visit this quaint, coastal town!

The town’s growth began with its fishermen. The town had a wonderful natural harbor and abundant lobster and fishing grounds. However, the town lost a large number of its sons at sea. In response, the city constructed a memorial to honor the Gloucester Fishermen. The statue depicts The Gloucester Fisherman, and the legend of the town’s enduring fishing tradition. For many residents, this was enough to make Gloucester the center of their lives.

The historic town of Gloucester is only 33 miles or 53 km from Boston. Gloucester takes pride in being the birthplace of the schooner (1713). With a plentiful fish supply and forests inland, Gloucester benefited from its trade. Today, it’s home to a world-famous art colony. A number of local hotels offer accommodations and dining options to tourists. If you’re visiting Gloucester for the first time, consider putting it on your bucket list.
