Founded in the mid 1800s, Jacksonville was a gold-mining boomtown. But the railroad bypassed the town and a new city, Medford, was built on the same spot. The two cities also share a rich history. As early as 1849, gold was discovered in Oregon territory and thousands of miners headed to the region in search of their fortune.
