15 Classic Souvenirs from Monhegan Island Maine

May 20, 2022 | More: Monhegan Island Maine| Souvenirs

Visit Monhegan Island Maine for a day trip and take in some of the beauty of its headlands and surrounding waters. The town has a Main Street that leads through the developed part of town. You can stroll the streets and visit art galleries and shops or enjoy a delicious meal at a nearby restaurant. Visitors to the town can also visit the historic Monhegan Lighthouse, which was built in 1824 and is still active as a navigational aid for the U.S. Coast Guard. You can view the lighthouse grounds and learn about its history and significance.

The town was originally settled in 1614 and was visited by Virginia Gov. John Smith. After spending summers on Monhegan, he grew worried about the impact of development. He formed the Monhegan Associates to preserve the island’s natural beauty and to promote art on the island. This group now protects more than 300 acres of the island. There are several art galleries and museums on the island, and you can take in the local arts scene.

The town is home to a small, rocky island in Mid-Coast Maine. You’ll find no paved roads or shopping malls, but there are a variety of activities to enjoy. The fresh air and the soothing sounds of nature will make you feel like you’ve found an unspoiled hideaway. To make the most of your time on the island, request a free guide to Mid-Coast Maine.

There are plenty of hiking trails to enjoy while visiting Monhegan Island. While some of the trails are not well marked, you’ll be sure to enjoy the scenery as you wander the island’s woods. Several of the trails pass shipwrecks, cliffs and crashing waves. Some are rugged and unkempt, while others are thick with forest. If you decide to go on a hike on Monhegan Island, make sure to take your camera!

For art lovers, Monhegan Island offers 17 miles of hiking trails. The trails are mostly moderate to difficult, and take you down to the island’s pounded shoreline. Located on the island, the museum was founded by Thomas Edison’s youngest son, Ted. Founded by the family, Monhegan Associates helped preserve the island’s natural beauty. Its trails are crosshatched by nine miles of trails, and it’s not allowed to camp, fly drones, or camp.

The landscape is truly spectacular, and if you’re looking for a quiet place to spend the day, head to Monhegan Island. This beautiful island is just twenty miles from the mainland of Maine. You’ll never feel lonely here. There are few other tourists and the island has a friendly, welcoming population. In fact, many tourists come to Monhegan Island just for the scenery. The island is even home to wildlife.

Visitors can reach Monhegan Island via three ports in Maine. Each of the ports has parking for cars. The ride to Monhegan Island can be strenuous, and you’ll have to make your way through the rugged terrain to explore it. The island is only accessible by foot via dirt roads. It’s a good idea to have a car to take you around, as driving can be a challenge. If you’d like to enjoy some scenery and history, Monhegan Island is an ideal destination.
