15 Classic Souvenirs from Monterey Bay California

May 25, 2022 | More: Monterey Bay California| Souvenirs

If you’ve ever dreamed of living on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, then consider visiting Monterey Bay, California. This picturesque town is just under an hour south of San Francisco, and just north of the famous Big Sur. If you’re on Highway One, Monterey is one of the many places you should check out. If you’re not sure what to expect when you arrive, here are some tips to make your trip as pleasant as possible.

The historic district of Monterey has evidence of its fascinating past. Walkways were once awash with industrial equipment, while a bustling railway transported cans of sardines up the coast. Today, murals depict the varied population who once lived in these small homes. There are also signs explaining the historical significance of various buildings and landmarks. A great place to start your Monterey sightseeing is the Museum of Art and History, located in Custom House Plaza.

While Monterey is known for its pastoral paradise, it is also a thriving seaside city. Visitors can see a plethora of marine life in its kelp forest and kelp-covered waters. You can also go whale-watching and participate in other water activities. While you’re here, be sure to check out the Aquarium, which is located on Heritage Harbor. It is a must-see when visiting Monterey Bay.

Another great way to learn about the area’s history is to visit the National Steinbeck Center, which is in Salinas. It is where John Steinbeck was born and raised. The museum features an impressive collection of Steinbeck memorabilia. You can also experience the National Steinbeck House, which is near the National Steinbeck Center. The museum features a fascinating permanent exhibit on the author’s life and works. Regardless of what you’re interested in learning about Monterey, this area has something to offer everyone.

Whether you’re looking to walk, run, or cycle, there are plenty of scenic places to visit in Monterey Bay. The 18-mile Monterey Bay Recreation Trail, for instance, is a wonderful place to spend the day. Its perfectly paved path is perfect for strolling and biking, and you’ll get some great views along the way. You might even be lucky enough to see whales while you’re out on the Monterey Bay.

Whale watching is another popular activity in Monterey. You can take a whale-watching tour to see the mammals in their natural habitat. You can also go kayaking or paddle-boarding. Another exciting activity is to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which is home to more than 550 species of marine life. It is housed in an old sardine cannery. You can also find some interesting art in the area, including a museum dedicated to the history and research of marine life.

The city of Monterey was established by Father Junipero Serra and Don Gaspar de Portola in 1770. Father Serra built the Presidio and Mission de San Carlos Borromeo de Monterey, which served as a chapel for Presidio soldiers. This church, built in Spanish Colonial style, was later designated as a cathedral and is still active. During the Indian summer, you might be lucky enough to see the marine layer, which comes in at midday.
