Sonoma Valley’s history dates back to 5000 BC. The first people to settle in the area were the Wappo, Pomo, and Coast Miwoks. These people arrived in the area between 8000 BC and 5000 BC and left behind a rich heritage, leaving beautiful carvings on rocks and cliffs. These carvings are known as pecked curvilinear nucleated motifs. Europeans eventually settled in the area, bringing with them the need for timber and other resources.

Despite the wine region’s renowned agricultural heritage, Sonoma Valley is also widely recognized as the birthplace of California viticulture. In the 1820s, missionaries started planting vineyards here. In the 1850s, Dresel’s grafting efforts saved the California wine industry from the phylloxera louse. Today, Sonoma Valley is the source of some of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the northern region. Other types of wine grown in Sonoma Valley include Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel.

When to Visit: Summer and fall are the best times to visit Sonoma Valley. While November and October are sometimes colder, spring and fall are the most pleasant times to visit. The city is also busy with tourists during the summer and fall. During these seasons, so you can expect crowded streets and high rates. And be prepared to spend a little extra money for a wine vacation. If you have an extra day or two to spare, there’s plenty to do in Sonoma Valley.

When to Visit Sonoma Valley: If you’re planning a wedding in Sonoma Valley, consider the time of year you wish to get married. The weather in spring is warm, and the foliage and flowers are in full bloom. However, if you’re looking for a less crowded time, fall and early fall are the most popular seasons to get married. And, for the best views of the region, you’ll want to check the calendar to see what days are the most romantic for a wedding.
