The town of Taos was incorporated as a general law municipality on May 7, 1934. It has a Mayor/Council form of government, with a Town Manager appointed by the Council. The history of the town dates back to August 29, 1540, when it was settled by Capitan Hernando Alvarado. In addition to the museums, there are also several houses of the Taos Society of Artists, which have their own unique culture and artistic legacy.
