Located about 50 miles north of Charlotte, Winston-Salem is home to many other interesting and historic sites. If you love the arts, Winston-Salem is the perfect place for you to enjoy a variety of different arts and culture.

The town began as a Moravian church congregation in 1792 and quickly evolved into an active trading center and haven for entrepreneurs. The town was named after a local Revolutionary War hero, Major Joseph Winston. Winston-Salem was incorporated in 1849 and the U.S. Post Office moved into both towns. The two towns were later consolidated in 1913. While these two towns have their own history, Winston and Salem are often referred to as one.

The city has many attractions for children to enjoy, including a world-class arts museum and a planetarium. Visiting the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art will expose your children to internationally acclaimed artists while the Reynolda House Museum of American Art will help them learn about the history of art and science through hands-on exhibits. The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem also offers fun and engaging programs and exhibits for children.

Another popular attraction in Winston-Salem is the Old Salem Museums and Gardens. There, more than 20 historic buildings are interpreted by knowledgeable interpreters to demonstrate life in the Moravian community during the 18th century. Visitors will be able to witness the daily lives of the Moravians, including the cobbler making shoes and dyeing yarn for weaving. Visitors can enjoy the gardens and the bounty from their harvest.

The city was a major center for manufacturing in the tobacco industry in the 19th century. The Reynolds family founded the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and the town was able to benefit from the tobacco and textile industries. The Reynolds building was the prototype of the Empire State Building. The city’s economy has changed a great deal since those years, but the tobacco and textile industries are still vital to the local economy.
