15 Hiking Trails in Canandaigua Lake

March 9, 2022 | More: Canandaigua Lake| Hiking Trails

Canandaigua Lake is the fourth largest Finger Lake in New York State. The northern end of the lake is home to the City of Canandaigua, while the southern end is a few miles south of Naples, NY. Canandaigua is the westernmost of the major Finger lakes. There are no tourist attractions or other amenities in this area, so it is best to visit during the summer when the weather is mild and the water is clear.

In the summer, you can rent a boat and explore the lake. The city has several marinas and parking lots, and there are plenty of options for getting around the water. Those interested in history and culture will find a wealth of information in the Ontario County Historical Society’s Visitors Guide to Historic Canandaigua. There is plenty to do at Canandaigua, but don’t be afraid to take your time and plan your trip carefully.

In Canandaigua, you can take advantage of the lake’s recreational opportunities. A park on West Lake Road is an affordable option for summer fun. Another park is at East and West Lake Road. These two parks have grills and picnic tables and allow visitors to enjoy the lake without the worry of public safety. If you’re looking for an active way to spend your summer, you can try paddle boarding, water skiing, or fishing.

There are many outdoor activities and places to relax on Canandaigua Lake. A waterfront boardwalk and a picnic area are great options for the entire family. If you’re looking for a quieter place to relax, check out Squaw Island Recreation Area. There are also several kayak rentals and ice cream stands located near the shore. It’s important to remember that the lake is completely fenced off and you’ll need to pay admission to get on the water.

Squaw Island is a small island on the north end of Canandaigua Lake and is one of only two islands in the Finger lakes. There are also rare formations of lime carbonate oncolites (limestone). Native American history is prominent in this area. There are several museums and historic sites worth visiting, and you can also enjoy fishing. The island has a large bird population and can be difficult to reach by land.

The city has a variety of recreational activities to offer. If you love to swim, you’ll want to visit Kershaw Park, which is the only public stretch along the lake. This beautiful park has a swimming beach and is usually open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. If you’re looking for a more active day, you’ll want to try windsurfing. You can also rent boats in Woodville and Onanda.
