15 Hiking Trails in Dover Delaware

March 15, 2022 | More: Dover Delaware| Hiking Trails

Dover is the capital of the state of Delaware. There are many attractions in this historic city. The 1791 Old State House, Biggs Museum of American Art, Dover International Speedway, Air Mobility Command Museum and more all cluster around the centuries-old Green. You can also enjoy the NASCAR races at Dover International Speedway, visit the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge and take in the views of the Delaware Bay from the top of the city.

The Biggs Museum of Art is a must-see when in Dover. Its collection includes hundreds of pieces of art and is located on the Old State House grounds. This green space in the middle of Dover is the symbolic heart of the city and the site of ratification of the Constitution. The John Bell House and the Dover Air Force Base are also located on the Green. If you want to get an overview of the history of the city, the town has a lot to offer.

The Biggs Museum of Art is located on the opposite end of the Legislative Mall and houses hundreds of works of art. Founded by Sewell C. Biggs, the museum is the oldest wooden frame structure in Dover. It was originally built as an outbuilding for a tavern complex, but now serves as a beautiful museum. The Johnson Victrola Museum pays homage to the inventor of the recording medium, Eldridge Reeves Johnson, who founded the Victor Talking Machine Company. You can also go hiking and canoeing here.

Dover’s history and location make this city a desirable destination for tourists and residents alike. U.S. Route 13 and Alternate pass through the city’s downtown area. U.S. Route 1 provides access to Wilmington and the beaches of Delaware. The route ends near the Dover Air Force Base, where the main office buildings are located. There is also the Dover Days Festival, which celebrates the rich history of the city.

For those who enjoy nature, the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is a must-see. This national wildlife refuge was founded in 1937 and covers nearly 16,000 acres along the Delaware Bay. The trails, which range in length from a mile to ten miles, are mostly flat and are appropriate for hikers of all levels. The Boardwalk Trail offers the best views of the salt marsh and waterfowl. The visitor’s guide will assist them with identifying the habitats of different animals.

While visiting Dover, you can also choose to take a bike tour around the capital city. This 14.8-mile loop will take you past the state capitol, as well as the Governor’s Mansion. You can even stop by the state’s historic plantation sites on your tour. In addition to the historic landmarks, the Dover Bike Loop will provide you with an ideal opportunity to explore the city by bicycle. And while you’re there, you should be sure to ride the bike loop, which will make your trip worthwhile.
