The glaciation and erosion caused by continental ice to scour and scrape the granite peaks of the White Mountains, creating the gorge that we see today. Two prominent glacial erratics are Boise Rock and The Cannon, which sit on the top of Cannon Mountain and were most likely transported by the ice.
The Old Man of the Mountain is the most famous piece of history in Franconia Notch, which is the state’s emblem and represents the “Live Free or Die State”. This imposing granite monolith was discovered in 1805 and was nicknamed “The Great Stone Face” or “The Profile”. It was a major attraction in Franconia Notch for 198 years before it collapsed in 2003.
