15 Hiking Trails in Franconia Notch New Hampshire

April 19, 2022 | More: Franconia Notch New Hampshire| Hiking Trails

A major mountain pass in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Franconia Notch is the perfect place to take a scenic drive and enjoy the surrounding beauty. Mount Lafayette and Cannon Mountain dominate the vista to the west and east, respectively. Located in Franconia Notch State Park, Franconia Notch Parkway passes through the scenic area. Here are the best things to do in Franconia Notch.

Flume Gorge is a breathtaking natural attraction. The narrow, moss-covered granite walls stand 70-90 feet high, and are just 12 to 20 feet wide. The gorge is a two-mile loop that offers views of cascading waterfalls, glacier pools, and large boulders. During a day trip, you can also hike to the base of the waterfall, the Greenleaf Hut.

The glaciation and erosion caused by continental ice to scour and scrape the granite peaks of the White Mountains, creating the gorge that we see today. It also deposited glacial erratics, boulders of one type that sat on top of another bedrock type. Two prominent glacial erratics are Boise Rock and The Cannon, which sit on the top of Cannon Mountain and were most likely transported by the ice.

The Old Man of the Mountain is the most famous piece of history in Franconia Notch, which is the state’s emblem and represents the “Live Free or Die State”. This imposing granite monolith was discovered in 1805 and was nicknamed “The Great Stone Face” or “The Profile”. It was a major attraction in Franconia Notch for 198 years before it collapsed in 2003.

A visit to Franconia Notch State Park is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery and views in the White Mountains. Many of the attractions in the park are seasonal, and some may even require advance reservations. If you plan to visit during peak season, check the park’s website for open hours and information on how to reserve campsites and other lodging options. After you’ve decided which attractions are a must for you, head to Franconia Notch State Park and make your plans. You’ll be glad you did!

When visiting Franconia Notch State Park, you’ll be surrounded by scenic vistas, lakes, and historical sites. A beautiful 8-mile stretch of road includes the Flume, a narrow gorge carved into the side of Mount Liberty. Cannon Mountain, 5 miles south of Franconia, has excellent skiing and an aerial tramway that reaches its summit. The Franconia Notch area is also a great place to take the kids during the winter.

While hiking at Franconia Notch State Park, it’s best to bring a leashed dog to protect wildlife. You’ll find plenty of opportunities for adventure along the trail. Just make sure to keep your dog on a leash and pick up after your pup. The park’s many attractions will captivate your kids, so you’ll definitely want to bring them along for the hike. And don’t forget to bring your camera.
