If you’re looking for a small city off of Route 66, Gallup, New Mexico is a great choice. The city sits on the historic Route 66, making it ideal for travelers. If you’re interested in Native American culture, you can visit the Red Rock Park and view the ancient Anasazi art. The Red Rock Museum highlights this heritage with pottery and silver on display. The Gallup Cultural Center features Native American crafts, while the Rex Museum covers local history.

You can even take a hot air balloon ride from Gallup, where you can see canyons and Anasazi ruins from above. Aside from the amazing views, you’ll also see wildlife like bobcats and foxes as you soar above the town. To get a taste of the history of this area, you can visit the historic Hotel in town. The landmark hotel once hosted Hollywood movie stars during filming of westerns and features neon signs welcoming visitors.

To start your hiking experience, head to Pyramid Rock in Church Rock. This historic landmark is a popular destination for hikers and climbers. For the most scenic trails, head to Red Rock Park in Church Rock, NM. This park is located near Gallup along NM Route 58 and the historic Route 66. Alternatively, you can use the Alltrails app to find a trail in Gallup and explore its trails. It’s easy to navigate thanks to NM Route 118, which is also known as Historic Highway 66. Just make sure to plan your route in advance, or download the Alltrails hiking app and start exploring!
