The city is the county seat of Josephine County, northwest of Medford along the Rogue River. As of the 2020 census, its population was 39189. The local economy is largely agricultural, but the city has many other attractions. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean makes it a great choice for outdoor recreation.

There are many parks in Grants Pass, Oregon. Several of these city-run parks feature diverse green spaces and host community events, including concerts in the park. The Reinhart Volunteer Park was built by the community and has facilities for several sports. The city’s post office is home to two tempera murals. These were painted during the New Deal period, and are often mistaken for WPA programs. The murals, entitled Early and Contemporary Industries, and Rogue River Indians, are the only two to survive from the time. Both are well worth seeing. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday. The city is also one of the most caffeinated cities in Southern Oregon, home to the Dutch Bros. coffee company. In fact, this is the western-most stretch of Interstate highway in the continental United States.
