The town is home to a variety of historical sites, from the historic First Church of Christ (founded by Puritan leader Thomas Hooker in 1636) to the Connecticut State Museum. A popular walking trail is the Metacomet Trail, which covers six2.7 miles (100 km). Part of the New England National Scenic Trail, the Metacomet features historic properties, cliff faces, forests, and lakes. The castle is open year-round from 8am until sunset. The trail to the river will take you past the historic Chester-Hadlyme ferry.

The history of the city includes the Connecticut Witch Trials, which took place between 1647 and 1663. Eleven people were tried and executed for witchcraft, including Alice Young, the first woman to be executed for witchcraft in the United States. The city also features the Mark Twain House, the home of legendary writer Samuel L. Clemens, known by his pen name Mark Twain. With its many historic sites, Hartford has something to offer every visitor.

The city is known as the Insurance Capital of the World, thanks to the large number of insurance professionals. With over 400,000 revolvers manufactured in the town during the Civil War, Hartford was a hotspot for business. The city was home to some of the country’s most influential people. Other noteworthy residents of the 19th century included Samuel Colt. The Connecticut native patented the mechanism for revolvers, which allowed a gun to be shot repeatedly without reloading. In fact, Colt’s company grew to be one of the largest in the country.

The Old State House is a landmark in the city. Located on the site of the first Amistad Trial, the building was home to one of the country’s most famous writers. The house is now a National Historic Landmark. Tours are available and are an excellent way to learn about Connecticut’s history. You can even get a guided tour of the museum. You can even visit the homes of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe in Hartford.
