For a quick, scenic getaway, try a trip to Livingston Montana. This town is the original gateway to Yellowstone National Park, and its rich history is well-represented by its museums. Explore the town’s legendary people, landmark events, and heritage at the Livingston Museum. Or get a taste of the local arts scene at the Dulcie Theater and Blue Slipper Theater. Whether you’re a history buff or an outdoorsman, you’ll find something to suit your fancy in the town.
If you’re looking for a more adventurous activity, try hiking in the area. The Pine Creek trail is a popular hiking route in Livingston, and is a relatively easy hike. During the summer, the trail is especially popular because it includes a climb up Black Mountain. This trail is about five miles long, but remains relatively flat throughout. The waterfall at the end is spectacular and the views from the top are amazing. But if you’re looking for a more challenging hike, consider climbing up the nearby Black Mountain.
Another area of interest is Sacajawea Park, a multi-use park located next to the Yellowstone River. This green oasis features numerous sports fields, a riverside walking path, and a few play structures for kids. A popular trail system connects the park to North 12th Street and the Bitterroot Trail. If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure, the Absaroka range, towering to the south of Livingston, offers several hiking and climbing opportunities. You can choose from trailheads at Suce creek, Misson creek, Elephant head, and Swingly road. The trail to the summit is over 9200 feet high, so you’ll need good hiking shoes and a raincoat. Bring snacks and a camera. Bear spray is also helpful. Although grizzlies don’t live in Livingston, you can never be too careful!
If you want to take your time and learn about the history of the Yellowstone River, you can visit the Lewis and Clark Museum. Located on 118W Chinook Street, the museum offers both permanent and temporary exhibits. You can also check out the exhibits in the Expeditions Room. You can hear about the expeditions of famous explorers in this room. The expeditions of Lewis and Clark were mapped out, and other expeditions later led to the discovery of the Yellowstone National Park.
While Livingston may be small by today’s standards, its historic train station and location on the Yellowstone River have contributed to its town’s enduring appeal. In the 1880s, Livingston gained national prominence as the Northern Gateway to Yellowstone National Park. This was also the point of departure for the Northern Pacific Railroad, which connected Livingston with the national park. Because of the railroad, the town grew around the depot. The railroad workers who travelled to the park were building settlements and towns nearby. As the park became popular, more travelers began visiting Livingston.
For a more leisurely stroll, take a trip to the Bozeman Trail, a one-mile gravel walking path. This trail is funded by the City of Livingston and the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Recreational Trails Program. The trail connects the Northern Lights Subdivision to Fleshman Creek Road, and has two small lakes to explore. The trail is also located just half a mile from the Northside Soccer Fields, so it can easily be incorporated into a longer walk.
