15 Hiking Trails in Luray Virginia

May 13, 2022 | More: Hiking Trails| Luray Virginia

A visit to Luray Virginia is sure to be a fascinating experience. Luray’s historic sites include the Elk Run Meeting House, which served as a barracks for Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. The building still bears the signatures of the previous residents and is home to the oldest African-American schoolhouse in the state. There are also many other things to do in the area. Here are some things to do when visiting Luray:

The Luray Valley Museum teaches visitors about the area’s Indigenous history, with pre-contact artifacts on display. It also explains how the area grew in the 1800s and 1920s. Visitors can explore the area’s wildlife by hiking or taking a scenic drive along Skyline Drive. Luray’s Hawksbill Greenway is a two-half-mile bird sanctuary, and it is a designated Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail.

You can also find many things to do in the area while visiting Luray. You can check out three wineries and enjoy a delicious glass of wine while you are in the area. You can visit a museum devoted to the area’s history or visit the town’s underground caverns. There are many places to visit in Luray, and you can find something for everyone no matter what your interests are. It is also possible to plan a vacation around the town’s many attractions.

For an exciting adventure, consider a visit to the Haunted House at Darkwood Manor. This haunted house was once owned by a wealthy couple. It is popular with ghost hunters and is a must-see during the Halloween season. With 18 years of operation, this haunted house has captured many visitors’ imaginations. And for those who aren’t afraid of the dark side, it’s definitely the place to be during the Fall season.

While you’re in Luray, VA, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the local area’s historic sites. Luray Caverns is one of the most impressive tourist attractions in Virginia, with massive chambers and jaw-dropping stalactites and golden stone columns. The cavern is also a great place to take photographs. Soak in the beauty of the area’s history and enjoy some great wine while you’re here.

Caves and caverns are two different things. While caves are underground, caverns are underground hollows formed by soluble rock. This allows stalactites and other formations to grow. However, caves do not get any sunlight. In Virginia, there are nine different caverns, each one with different formations. Tours are available at several locations. Whether you’re traveling with family, a trip to the caverns is sure to delight.
