15 Hiking Trails in Macon Georgia

May 13, 2022 | More: Hiking Trails| Macon Georgia

If you’re planning a visit to Macon Georgia, you’ve probably heard good things. The city’s live-animal habitats and Mark Smith Planetarium are great attractions for kids. It’s also open daily and offers programs for local schools and organizations, including field trips. Whether you’re a history buff or a nature lover, you’ll find something to interest you in Macon. Below, we’ll take a look at what you can expect when visiting Macon.

The town’s storied past can be traced to more than a thousand years ago, when the region was populated by Paleo-Indians and Mississippian tribes. The reconstructed Earth Lodge at Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park is one of the oldest in the world, and early Mississippian temple mounds are also present at the site. If you’re looking for a more modern day experience, try touring the Macon Agricultural Museum.

Adventure-lovers won’t be disappointed with spring break adventures in Georgia. At Chehaw Park, Jim Fowler designed and supervised the Wild Kingdom theme park, where guests can ride open-air on African veldt and feed a two-hummed camel. Or visit the Flint RiverQuarium to learn about the ecosystem of blue holes and aquatic creatures. You can even meet an albino alligator, which is unique to the region.

The town’s three locations feature Smiley’s Flea Markets, which are open to the public. At the Macon facility, more than 1,000 selling spaces span 30 acres and are supported by a full-service restaurant. Visitors can browse through items for sale from local vendors and enjoy refreshments and concessions. Anyone can sell their wares at the market, and many people have done so successfully. You can visit the other two locations in North Carolina and Florida, or even try your luck at the one in Macon.

To learn more about the history of African Americans in Macon, Georgia, check out the Tubman Museum. This museum, the largest of its kind in the Southeast, makes a positive statement about the Black experience in the region. Visitors can view displays of military heroes and entertainers, including Macon’s only Medal of Honor recipient, Otis Redding. Rev. Pearly Brown was the first Black entertainer to perform at Carnegie Hall and on the Grand Ole Opry, and is another great exhibit. Visitors are sure to enjoy exhibits from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, and Little Richard.

Music is a huge part of Macon’s culture, so if you’re a music buff, there’s probably something to interest you in this town. The city’s Grand Opera House, built in the late 1800s, was expanded in 1904 to accommodate the growing population of middle Georgia. Will Rogers and Harry Houdini both performed here at one time or another. The Grand Opera House is one of the most popular points of interest in Macon, Georgia.

Another place to explore in Macon is the Allman Brothers Band Cemetery. These four musicians are buried in the same graveyard. The graveyard is located on 50 acres. Take the time to stroll the trails and soak in the history of the area. And don’t forget to take some beautiful photos. Macon has something for everyone. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the number of things to do in Macon. While you’re here, don’t forget to check out the Allman Brothers Band Museum.
