15 Hiking Trails in Marblehead MA

May 17, 2022 | More: Hiking Trails| Marblehead MA

If you’re looking for a great getaway from the bustling city of Boston, you’ll want to check out Marblehead, Massachusetts. This charming town offers plenty of things to do and convenient shopping. The city’s crown jewel is Chandler Hovey Park. The quaint park features picnic areas, swimming, and scenic views. You’ll find everything from sailor’s hats and gloves to American-made clothing.

In the colonial period, Marblehead was a thriving trading center. Merchants, mariners, and sailmakers populated the town. After the Revolutionary War, the town evolved into a thriving seaside resort and yachting center. You’ll see colonial-era houses and buildings on the streets, and plaques in some of them list the original occupants and builders. Many homes in the town have incredible views, making it a perfect place for a romantic getaway or a family vacation.

One of the oldest buildings in Marblehead is the John Brown House Museum. This 17th century mansion was built from materials brought from England on the ship “Whydah”. Exhibits here explore maritime history and local history. This historic site has also been discovered during an archaeological dig. This makes the town’s history even more fascinating. It’s well worth a visit if you’re in the area! Once upon a time, Marblehead was a quiet seaside village. Today, it’s a bustling resort town, with a population of over 50,000.

For a more relaxed meal, visit the local café, the Marblehead Cafe, and the Three Cod Tavern, which serve seafood and bar fare. Both of these restaurants are laidback spots and offer great wine and food. Shubies Marketplace offers sandwiches and other prepared foods. And the waterfront is lined with vintage boats, so you can’t go wrong with a trip here. And if you’re looking for something a little more substantial, you can always tuck into Shubies Marketplace and pick up a sandwich or a burger.

If you’re visiting with a dog, check out the Nahant Dog Beach, which is 6.5 miles from Marblehead. Although it’s not dog-friendly, this paved beach offers a picturesque setting and clean surroundings for your canine friend. Just make sure you bring plenty of water for your dog when you visit. You’ll be happy you did. If you’re staying in Marblehead, don’t forget to bring the leash!

Whether you’re sailing, fishing, or exploring the town’s harbors, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this quaint coastal town. The earliest principal harbor dates back to the 1630s, but the town’s history extends much further back than that. For centuries, the town was the start port for many international races. It’s no wonder there are several yacht clubs in the town. Some of the oldest clubs date back to the late 1800s!

In addition to the Old Burial Hill, Marblehead’s cemetery has a long history. You can explore the graves of Revolutionary heroes from the town’s history. The cemetery was founded in 1638 and contains the graves of over 600 Revolutionary veterans. General Jonathan Glover is buried there. This historical cemetery also features graves of sea captains and fishermen. In addition, the town is home to the grave of Wilmot “Mammy” Redd, who was the only resident executed during the Salem Witch Trials.
