The history of Mashpee dates back to the 1650s. The Wampanoag tribe originally lived in this region and were resettled with the Sakonnet and Nauset in present-day Rhode Island. The region was a rich source of fish and wood, and English colonists designated Mashpee as one of the largest Indian reservations in Massachusetts. The town’s name, Mashpee, is an Anglicization of its Native name mass-nippe, which translates to greater cove or land. The Old Indian Meeting House was built in 1684 and is considered to be the oldest Native American church in the United States.

The town’s national wildlife refuge opened in 1995. Featuring expansive forests and salt marsh, this preserve is home to waterfowl and red fox.

The Wampanoag tribe is the heart of Mashpee’s history. The Wampanoag Powwow is an annual celebration of the tribe’s homecoming, and the Wampanoag Museum honors their culture and history. Right next to the Wampanoag Museum, the town hosts the Mashpee Herring Run, during which 300,000 herring migrate upriver to spawn in Mashpee Pond.
