15 Hiking Trails in Red Lodge Montana

A visit to Red Lodge Montana is not complete without experiencing Yellowstone National Park. This national park is a magnificent sight and offers many activities to visitors. If history is your thing, the Carbon County Historical Society & Museum is a must-see. The museum features an extensive collection of historic guns and Greenough rodeo memorabilia, as well as coal mine exhibits. The museum is open to the public and hosts educational programs and tours.

Hikers can explore the surrounding area by hiking. The four-mile-long Trail to Red Lodge Mountain offers an elevation gain of more than 1000 feet. In 2018, the Forest Service finished the trail, with help from volunteer labor and funding from the BRTA. The trailhead is located near the Red Lodge Mountain parking lot, while the lower trailhead is located approximately a quarter mile down the West Fork Road from its intersection with Ski Run Road.

A visit to the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary, formerly known as the Beartooth Nature Center, is a great way to get up close to the local wildlife. Located on the outskirts of Red Lodge, this center houses animals that cannot be released back into the wild. Many of the animals came from the Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks. Others were found after their mothers were shot, and some were donated by private ranches. Visiting the sanctuary is a good thing for wildlife and people alike. In addition to the wildlife, there is a beautiful native flower garden that you can enjoy while learning about the local flora and fauna.

The town is an idyllic setting for vacationing. The city is located just 60 miles southwest of Billings, Montana, and is surrounded by picturesque mountain ranges. The Beartooth Highway connects Red Lodge to the national park. The town’s mountainous location provides the perfect climate for outdoor activities.
